Rolls-Royce sponsors kids’ racing team

Ten students from March CE Primary school, in England, participated in the Greenpower IET Formula Goblin competition this year. In this program, 9-11 year old students build and race miniature electric cars so they can learn engineering skills in a fun and innovative way. The difference this year is that Rolls-Royce sponsored “Team March.”

March Primary school is just right around the corner from the Rolls-Royce HQ in Goodwood, UK, and the racing competition is held on the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Team March’s support from Rolls-Royce helped them win the ‘Best Bodywork’ prize, as well as provide them with custom racing suits made in their leather working department. The team also enjoyed a tour of the Rolls-Royce factory and Rolls engineers consulted them when constructing the electric car.

The race car itself is kit-based and comes in a flat box with step by step instructions so the children can easily understand. The overall project integrates areas like friction, electricity, materials, math and design technology so kids can be fully immersed in a taste of real-world engineering and automotives. The project also encourages parental participation and support from local businesses to help the project both practically and financially.

FORMULA 1 GP RACE POPULARITY DRIVES JOHN EAGLE EUROPEAN CARS & COFFEE TO MOVE TO THE OASIS IN AUSTIN

Austin’s first Formula One race has driven so much growth in the auto enthusiast community that “John Eagle European Cars & Coffee” will move to the famed OASIS on Lake Travis. Beginning January 13, 2013, the monthly automotive celebration will relocate to the “Sunset Capital of Texas” with the F1 Watch Party Race Events hosted by Zinger Hardware, multiple dining options, additional parking, shopping and club gatherings.

“John Eagle European Cars & Coffee has grown tremendously in popularity since we introduced it to Central Texas,” said Sonny Morgan, dealer principal of John Eagle European. “It was amazing how our monthly event stirred so much interest in the local car culture. With the opening of the new Circuit of Americas and the recent F1 GP race, the initial spark of automotive passion became a fire in Austin.”

The first John Eagle European Cars & Coffee attracted about 200 vehicles to the “Old Town” section of Leander, Texas. One Sunday a month, the city blocked off streets for owners to show off their cars, trucks and motorcycles. But the strong response overwhelmed Leander. Crowds began to swarm the event over the past few months, forcing many to park their vehicles three and four deep on grass and rocky, dirt lots.

“Not only was the event unable to grow, it became an uncomfortable, potentially dangerous situation with cars stacked all over town,” explained Morgan. “People wanted more and better parking. They began to ask us for shelter from the elements when it became hot or cold and an F1 watching party, as well as better dining options. To better accommodate the event, we had to move to The OASIS on Lake Travis. It will be the hub of Austin car culture between races at the Circuit of Americas.”

Designed by Dick Clark Architecture, the OASIS complex has an old world-inspired style. It boasts restaurants and a retail village that when completed will have about 30 shops offering apparel, accessories, jewelry, gifts, confectioneries and more. The picturesque site includes a five-story office building with a parking garage. The centerpiece of the location is the Tex-Mex Oasis restaurant with a reputation as the largest outdoor restaurant in Texas.

“We embraced F1 as soon as the Circuit was announced,” added Jody Theriot, a manager at The OASIS. “The excitement it brought this year continues to drive economic growth. The John Eagle European Cars & Coffee event at The OASIS will be truly unique with a combination of fine cars, fine food, fine shopping and F1. Nothing will compare to spectacular hill country vistas adorned by some of the most exciting vehicles in the world. Between the shopping, cars and dining, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

With the interest in F1 that resulted in the successful US race on Nov. 18, watching parties have sprung up in Texas. Zinger Hardware, with the support of John Eagle European started the largest one in 2009. The F1 Watch Party will relocate to the Oasis as an extension of the John Eagle European Cars & Coffee event.

“The sheer number of people joining us to view F1 races has skyrocketed,” stated F1 Watch Party founder Michael Ferweda. “While seeking a new location to accommodate our swelling ranks, Sonny Morgan suggested collaboratively moving the two events to the Oasis. Since most of the races are the second Sunday of the month, it was an easy decision to coordinate with The F1 Watch Party Event. Now motorsport fans can spice up race weekends with these two events.”

Originating in Southern California in 2005, Cars and Coffee began with a group of enthusiasts who wanted to share their cars in an environment where they could be comfortable enough to ask questions, learn and experience the joys of the diverse offering of cars. John Eagle European Cars & Coffee is an extension of the California show. Every type of street legal vehicle is welcome, from muscle cars to exotics, motorcycles, military vehicles and pre-war classics. There is no cost or time commitments to participate or view the show.

The OASIS (www.oasis-austin.com) is located at 6550 Comanche Trail in Austin, Texas. John Eagle European Cars & Coffee will be held there each month on the Second Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm. The F1 Watch Parties will be held each race day at 1 pm - 3:30 pm.
